Fallout 3 xlive.dll crash SOLUTION

Recently I decided to fire up Fallout 3 and partake in a little super-mutant battlefest. Fragging those hulking, machine-gun-wielding monsters with mini-nukes is a small pleasure to be sure, but aren't the small pleasures what make life worth living?

Having Fallout 3 through Steam, it is kept updated with the latest patch. I haven't loaded it in a while and I was a bit surprised when it made me install Games for Windows Live. I think I tried to cancel it, but it must have completed the install as I had to afterward uninstall it through Vista's control panel. It all happened in something of a blur as I was feverishly clicking the mouse and trying to hit the bong at the same time.

Apparently either Fallout 3 will not run without GFWL also installed or I screwed something up. I am inclined to think the former based on what I have read in attempting to solve the problem I was now faced with: the dreaded APPCRASH.

There was a fault in xlive.dll that prevented Fallout 3 from launching past the loader. While I do have an xlive.dll in my \Windows\sysWOW64\ directory (I use 64-bit Vista), either it is not the correct version or the dll does not exist in the proper place. I tried copying it to both \Windows\System32 and \Fallout 3 directories to no avail. And that was after I deleted my installation and redownloaded the behemoth from Steam (good thing I don't have metered bandwidth).

But I was just now able to get into the game! I found the Games for Windows LIVE Disabler, a small exe file that will rid Fallout 3's dependence on GFWL. It even removes the GFWL option on the menu.

Of course if you are interested in achievements and DLC and all that this solution isn't for you. Fortunately for myself I am not, so yay for me! And yay for you too if you feel like I do!

Again, the link to get the program is here: Games for Windows LIVE Disabler.

  1. FUCK IT DOESNT WORK

  2. uhhhh……I’ve downloaded the program. But it shows “Cannot find your Fallout.ini! This usually means you haven’t run Fallout3 yet, plz do so now before running G4WL disabler again.” So when am I suppose to run the program? When I open the launcher or something?

  3. Unfortunately, I do not know what this issue is. I would recommend going to the official site for the disabler which is linked in the above post. You might also try its official nexus forum thread at:

Beyond that, my guess would be to re-install FO3 then give it another shot. But I recommend getting other, more expert advice before going that far.

  4. Thanks alot! Worked for me. (I had unstalled the GFWL bloatware)

    • i am using win 7 (32 bit)…got the same problem for FO3 (Cannot find your Fallout.ini! This usually means you haven’t run Fallout3 yet, plz do so now before running G4WL disabler again.)can u pls tell me wat u did fro the game to work

  5. This doesn’t work. Vista 64 bit. Same problem as above.

  6. Does not appear to work with windows 7 :(

  7. The same happens when you have an older version of GFWL installed, and it seems you need .NET Framework 3.5 SP1.I had a similar problem with the game Kane and Lynch.Couldn’t lunch it until i have upgraded to the newest GFWL version and have installed .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 (takes ages by the way)

I wrote down step by step how i got it to work here :

    http://webbanshee.blogspot.com/2009/10/games-for-windows-xlivedll-crash.html

  8. This is working on windows 7 64bit

  9. For those not wondering why it’s working, run the launcher, not the game itself. Once the launcher has run, then you can run the disabler, and then click play.
I don’t know how it might work for steam, though.

  10. Download Game update from http://fallout.bethsoft.com/eng/downloads/updates.html before run update download and disable Xlive.dll by using Games for Windows LIVE Disabler v1.2.2 (google it) then run update and enjoy the game if u dont have original DVD download latest NO DVD or CD from (Depend on ur Game version) http://m0001.gamecopyworld.com/games/pc_fallout_3.shtml#Fallout 3 v1.7 [MULTI2] No-DVD/Fixed EXE
    GoodLuck.

  11. just download games for windows live it works for me now I can play fallout 3 without problems!!
